ASEZ STAR Elmwood Park Cleanup

While many teens spend Sundays on their phones, ASEZ STAR volunteers traded screen time for rakes to help seniors. This event was part of the ASEZ STAR leaf cleanup for seniors, supporting residents in need. More than 30 middle and high school students from Ridgewood, Bogota, and nearby towns joined the effort. With the support of college students and parents, the total number of participants reached 55 for this year’s fall leaf cleanup.

Volunteers cleared leaves for seniors and residents with limited mobility, helping keep homes safe for the winter. The cleanup was organized in partnership with Elmwood Park’s RAP program, which connects seniors with essential seasonal support. ASEZ STAR students regularly participate in cleanups and service projects across Bergen County, fostering youth leadership in their communities.

Teamwork and Service at the Heart of ASEZ STAR’s Mission

Council President Lorraine Pellegrine joined the send-off to thank volunteers for their time and dedication to the community. “I just want to say on behalf of the borough of Elmwood Park, we’re so grateful that you’re here once again to help residents in need,” Pellegrine said. “We thank ASEZ STAR from the bottom of our hearts, and we appreciate each one of you every time you come—thank you all!”

“Helping our seniors is something we look forward to every year,” said ASEZ STAR high school volunteer Samantha Vasquez. “It might seem small, but by clearing leaves for someone who can’t do it themselves, we feel like we’re giving back in a meaningful way.”

From sidewalks to front lawns, volunteers worked in teams to complete multiple service calls throughout the town. The effort reflects ASEZ STAR’s mission to inspire students to serve their communities responsibly and compassionately. This leaf cleanup for seniors highlights the meaningful impact of student service.
