God the Mother

Jerusalem Mother

Heavenly Jerusalem, Our Mother

In the Bible, a word can have multiple meanings. For instance, the Lamb was a sacrificial offering in the Old Testament (Lev 3:7), while in the New Testament, Jesus is referred to as the Lamb who takes away the world’s sin (Jn 1:29). In Revelation, a bride is mentioned alongside the Lamb. Some interpret this bride as the church. However, this bride in Revelation is giving the water life, which represents eternal life (Jn 4:13–14).

“The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come!’ Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life.”

The Apostle John specifies the bride as the wife of the Lamb. In his revelation, he saw her coming down out of Heaven.

“‘Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.’ ... and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.”

Though there is the physical city of Jerusalem, it never descended from Heaven or granted eternal life. Instead, the meaning of Jerusalem here is female image of God; God the Mother who grants eternal life.

“But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.”

Eternal life can only be given by God. So, the bride that appears alongside the Lamb in the book of Revelation must be God. In other words, the bride, God our Mother, appears with God our Father to grant us the blessing of eternal life. Schedule a Bible study with us to learn more about God the Mother through the Bible!
