On September 23, 30 ASEZ STAR volunteers gathered at Cattus Island Park in Toms River, New Jersey, for an environmental cleanup. Spanning 530 acres, the park features maritime forests, salt marshes, and coastal ecosystems. It’s a popular spot for birdwatching, hiking, crabbing, kayaking, and exploring the shoreline. The butterfly garden, which attracts native species, adds to the park’s charm and makes it a favorite for locals seeking outdoor recreation and a connection to nature.
One of the park’s highlights is the Cooper Environmental Center, which showcases local wildlife through live displays of reptiles and fish. Also, the center provides educational programs for both children and adults. So, ASEZ STAR volunteers took this opportunity to support their community by helping maintain the park’s natural beauty.
ASEZ STAR Leads Environmental Cleanup at Cattus Island Park
This event was part of ASEZ STAR’s global Green World campaign, which aims to protect terrestrial and marine ecosystems threatened by climate change. Volunteers regularly organize cleanups in parks, forests, beaches, and streets, collecting trash and removing invasive weeds to help preserve their local environments.
Sergeant Michael Gallipoli of the Toms River Police Department joined the volunteers. He stated, “Being a leader means doing the right thing when no one is watching.” He expressed his appreciation for the students’ dedication and their impact on the community.
In the end, volunteers collected 100 pounds of trash along the park’s trails and playground. Local residents thanked them for their efforts, and many were inspired to contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable environment.
