ASEZ WAO Invasive Species Removal at Cheesequake State Park

On the morning of September 14, 2025, 53 young adult volunteers from ASEZ WAO met at Hooks Creek Lake in Cheesequake State Park to take part in Terrestrial Ecosystem Protection Campaign #7. They focused on removing invasive Japanese stiltgrass and helping maintain the park’s Blue Trail. Park Naturalist Nicole Bendixen guided the volunteers as they worked carefully to preserve the natural balance of the area.

Although Japanese stiltgrass can look delicate with its bamboo-like stems, it spreads quickly and overtakes native plants in shaded forests and woodlands. Because its seeds can remain viable for years, early removal is important to prevent future growth. Without intervention, it can take over trails and surrounding areas, which would disrupt the ecosystem. By removing it now, volunteers help keep the park healthy for everyone who visits.

Working Hand in Hand for Nature

New Jersey State Troopers Joshua Gross and Hunter Wysocki joined the effort alongside the volunteers. Trooper Wysocki said, “This event doesn’t only clean up the area—it also sends a message that a little help goes a long way.” Trooper Gross added, “The community will see that volunteers from all over—including Pennsylvania—came here to help remove the invasive species. That will motivate others to volunteer as well.”

Together, the volunteers and troopers made a noticeable impact on the park. Their work helped protect the Blue Trail and supported ASEZ WAO’s ongoing campaign to care for ecosystems. By acting together, they showed that consistent, hands-on effort can make a difference for the environment.
